"XIX" is the first track on .5: The Gray Chapter, as well as the album's First Promotional single.
Background[]
- "It’s pronounced 'XX', but it’s supposed to represent a couple of different things. It's the 19th year of the band's existence, and it's also a metaphor for stage two, because track one on the Iowa album was "(515)", and this is XIX, so in Roman numerals it's almost like a double of that. So it represents the new start and seeing where the road leads to. Lyrically, it's really about getting back up on your feet after getting smashed in the mouth, basically. It's just kind of the start of, you know, what would become to me the second stage of the band's career."
- —Corey Taylor[1]
In the beginning, Shawn Crahan can be heard muttering, "This song is not for the living. This song is for the dead". This probably means that the song is a tribute to their former bassist Paul Gray, who died of a drug overdose on May 24, 2010.
Lyrics[]
[Intro]
This song is not for the living
This song is for the dead
[Verse]
With my face against the floor
I can't see who knocked me out of the way
I don't want to get back up
But I have to, so it might as well be today
Nothing appeals to me, no one feels like me
I'm too busy being calm to disappear
I'm in no shape to be alone
Contrary to the shit that you might hear
[Chorus]
So walk with me, walk with me
Don't let this symbolism kill your heart
Walk with me, walk with me
Just like we should've done right from the start
Walk with me, walk with me
Don't let this fucking world tear you apart
Trivia[]
- "XIX" is the Roman numeral for 19. This probably refers the 19 years Slipknot had been together during the making of the album.
