"The Dying Song (Time to Sing)" (originally "Dying Song") is the second track on the standard and the thirteenth track on the European editions of The End, So Far, as well as the album's second single.[1]

Background

On December 16th, 2021 Corey Taylor, while in an interview with HardDrive Radio, stated that the goal was to mix it in January, so it would be ready for release, two or three months later, in either March or April. He also stated that Clown is currently working on the album's cover and the music videos for both "The Chapeltown Rag" and "whatever the first single's going to be".[2]

On May 18th, 2022 while in the official Knotverse Discord server, Clown stated that the "new single drops fairly soon".[3]

On June 6th, while on the official Knotfest Twitch account, Weinberg talked about the upcoming album, including info about the song, saying that it hopefully be released "within the next month or so."[4]

On July 18th, information about the album's second single, which featured the official album artwork with the misprinted title of The End, for Now…, was leaked onto Reddit.[5] And on July 19th, the album's full tracklist was leaked on Twitter.[6] And later in the day the band officially announced the album, The End, So Far, along with the music video for the single.[1]

"That song is really about the death of empathy and humanity, because of how technology has pulled us out of social circles and social niceties, social anything. It's the musical equivalent of bashing your head against a fucking wall."
Corey Taylor[7]

On the European editions of TESF, the single version of "The Dying Song" was included as a bonus track.[8]

Lyrics

[Intro]
Put your hands into the water
Let your mouth go sick and dry
Put your life into your death now
Let them sing until you die
Die, die, die, yeah

[Verse]
Radical rather than rhetorical, babble like an oracle
Why am I always in your debt?
Father and the son and the holy ghost
Communist comatose, show me all the wagers are a bet
The middle of a nuclear winter is a modern achievement of the retro apocalyptic horde
Satan? You must be mistaken, there are no more satans
Only the bosses on the board
Forget, deny, ignore, nice try, it's you
Regret, rely, remorse inside of you
Yeah

[Refrain]
Maybe you've been down too long
Maybe you've been down too long

[Chorus]
The heart begins to suffer
When the soul has given up
And the flesh is barely more than bone
When no one else is listening
Only when you've had enough
Time to sing this dying song alone
Put your hands into the water
Let your mouth go sick and dry
Put your life into your death now
Let them sing until you die
Die, die, die, yeah

[Refrain]
Maybe you've been down too long
Maybe you've been down too long

[Bridge]
Think hard, you bastards
You're gonna tell me why
If I don't get an answer
You're gonna sing and die
Think hard, you bastards
You're gonna tell me why
If I don't get an answer
You're gonna sing and die

[Chorus]
The heart begins to suffer
When the soul has given up
And the flesh is barely more than bone
When no one else is listening
Only when you've had enough
Time to sing this dying song alone
Put your hands into the water
Let your mouth go sick and dry
Put your life into your death now
Let them sing until you die
Put your hands into the water
Let your mouth go sick and dry
Put your life into your death now
Let them sing until you die
