The Basement Sessions is the name fans have given to a group of songs recorded in Paul Gray's basement in 1993.

Background[]

The line-up of this short-lived band was Anders Colsefni on vocals, Patrick M. Neuwirth on guitar, Paul Gray on bass and Shawn Crahan on drums. It was essentially a proto-Slipknot, but fell through because Paul was evicted from his home and the band lacked a place to record. The following two sessions were recorded.

Trivia[]

  • All eight songs have leaked on the internet, where they can be found with different names, such as "Gently (The Genesis Track)" or "Wise Up (Construction)". Three of them, namely "Gently", "Slipknot" and "Idiot", were also used as a basis for later Slipknot songs.
  • Paul Gray did lead vocals on the songs, "Idiot" & " What's Wrong"
  • Shawn wrote "Painface" on one of the tapes, as a name for the demo
  • The band wasn't actually called "Painface", as the group didn't have a band name at the time.[1]
    • The tentative name of the band was "NekChek", which was more of an inside joke between Shawn and Patrick.[2]
  • Anders wrote a song called Painface for this project, but the band broke up before they could record it.
