The End, So Far

The End, So Far is the seventh studio album by American heavy metal band Slipknot.[4] It was also their last album with Roadrunner,[5] but won't be their last album overall.[6] The album was originally slated for a spring/summer 2022 release date,[7][8][9][10] but was eventually released on September 30th, 2022.[11] The End, So Far is the first studio album to feature percussionist Michael Pfaff and the last studio album to feature drummer Jay Weinberg and sampler and keyboardist Craig Jones.[12]

When the album was first announced, the name was misprinted as The End for Now… on merch mock-ups[13][14][15] and on the original single artwork for "The Dying Song (Time to Sing)" on Spotify, before being updated to the correct artwork. The incorrect name also appeared on the original vinyl and cassette releases, with the vinyl copies having a sticker featuring the correct name placed over the incorrect one.[16] In a Reddit AMA, Taylor revealed that the album's name was always The End, So Far and that the incorrect name was caused by "somebody [who] […] didn't double check with us."[17]

Background

In March 2021, Corey Taylor said that the album could be a concept album.[18]

In June 2021, the Diluted Maggot Tumblr page reposted eight pictures of Slipknot in the studio recording the album, originally for OT9 Members. One of these photos included the track name "Heirloom", and another with an abbreviation for "De Sade".[19][20]

On August 26th, 2021 while talking to a fan as part of GalaxyCon, Corey explained that getting Covid-19 interrupted his final vocal sessions for the album.[21]

On October 22nd, 2021 Slipknot revealed there were to live stream Knotfest Los Angeles globally on November 5th.[22] In addition to the live streaming component, Knotfest released special edition merch bundles specific to the Los Angeles event, one of which includes a hoodie with "Secret Artwork" which was revealed on November 5th.[23]

On November 2nd, 2021 Slipknot released a new website, thechapeltownrag.com, which fans discovered by finding graphics and links on Knotfest.com. The website, at the time, included 6 NFT-like graphics, each of which included a brief sample of new music.[24] And with each graphic included a shard, which when combined made the "Secret Artwork" previously teased on the Knotfest Veeps website.[25] The next day, on November 3rd, 3 more graphics were released. The official title of the song, "The Chapeltown Rag", was revealed by using the Identify Songs Online website.[26] The next day, on November 4th, Slipknot officially announced the song, which was released and performed live for the first time at Knotfest Los Angeles on Friday, November 5th.[27]

On December 15th, 2021 Jim posted a video to his Instagram story detailing how Slipknot was still in the studio recording the album.[28] On December 19th, Jay Weinberg did the same.[29]

Over the course of a few months, Corey Taylor revealed more information on The End, So Far. On December 16th, while in an interview with HardDrive Radio, stated that the goal was to mix it in January, so it would be ready for release, two or three months later, in either March or April. He also stated that Clown is currently working on the album's cover and the music videos for both "The Chapeltown Rag" and "whatever the first single's going to be".[7] On January 11th he tweeted confirming that the album would be out in 2022.[30] On January 15th, while in an interview with Tony Toscano, stated that he had just finished the vocals on the album and was hopping to release the album by summer, or in the next two or three months.[9] On February 2nd, Corey confirmed that the album was finished with recording and only needed to be mixed. He reiterated saying that the album will be out in the next three months, while also confirming that the album artwork and title was done.[8][31] And on February 3rd, he stated that the album is "a heavier version of Vol. 3: (The Subliminal Verses)."[32]

On March 23rd, while in an interview with Loudwire, Sid Wilson revealed he was using "samples from different moons around different planets" and was working on the record while the band was on tour.[33]

On March 28th, while in an interview with WZOR, Jay Weinberg revealed that the album would feature "the heaviest blues song on earth,"[34] which was later revealed to be "Acidic".[35]

On May 5th, 6th, 18th and June 9th & 25th, while in the official Knotverse Discord server, Clown hosted a Q&A and answered a few questions about the upcoming album.[36][37][38][39][40][41]

On June 1st, while performing live at the Heritage Bank Center in Cincinnati, OH, USA, Taylor reiterated further saying that the album, despite not having an official release date, would be releasing "very fucking soon."[42]

On June 6th, while on the official Knotfest Twitch account, Weinberg talked about the upcoming album, stating that the album is fully completed, except the band is awaiting a release date, but it's coming "very, very soon." A new song will hopefully be release "within the next month or so." And the band "turned up the experimentation" on the record.[43]

On July 19th, the band officially announced the album, The End, So Far, with it's release date of September 30th and also released a music video for the second single, "The Dying Song (Time to Sing)".[4]

On August 5th, the band released the album's third single; "Yen".[44]

Two weeks later, starting on August 19th, Slipknot started to tease "Yen"'s music video, by posting a photo of a stained glass window with the band's logo.[45] Percussionist Michael Pfaff also posted the same photo but with a different angle to his Instagram account.[46] The following day, on the 20th, they posted a short video,[47] and the next day they posted another short video, this time revealing that the music video would be released on August 22nd.[48][49]

On August 25th, Reddit user @_Bahomar_ shared some translated information about the upcoming album featured in their copy of the German Visions music magazine, stating the heaviest songs are "Hive Mind" & "Warranty". The "heaviest blues song" is "Acidic". "Medicine for the Dead" partly reminds the music journalist on bands like Rush & Opeth.[35][50] The music journalist also stated that "Adderall" includes a "thirteen-piece choir and a warm melodic flow," indicating that "The Beginning of the End" teaser gave us a glimpse of the song.[51] Though it was revealed, once the album was released, that the song that was featured in "The Beginning of the End" teaser was actually "Finale".

On August 22nd, the band revealed nine limited edition CDs, each with a different cover featuring one of the nine band members.[52]

On September 13th, the band revealed a limited edition hand numbered slipcase version of the album, exclusive to Roadrunner's UK webstore.[53]

Nine days before the release date, Slipknot began posting short videos featuring small snippets of the remaining songs from the album. The clips were of "Adderall" on the 21st,[54] "Acidic" on the 22nd,[55] "Medicine for the Dead" on the 23rd,[56] "Heirloom" on the 24th,[57] "Warranty" on the 25th,[58] "Hive Mind" on the 26th,[59] "H377" on the 27th,[60] "De Sade" on the 28th[61] and "Finale" on the 29th.[62]

On September 26th, while in an interview with Music Radar Jim Root stated that Clown doesn't consider The End, So Far to be a Slipknot record, due to the band still being on the We Are Not Your Kind tour.[63]

Leaks

In the days prior to the official album announcement, various information was leaked on social media, particularly the band's unofficial reddit page.

Starting on July 14th, Reddit user @oooahh85 posted a conversation he had with a friend detailing how Slipknot had recorded two music videos.[64] The user also stated, in a comment left on the post, that one of the music videos was, at the time, to be released on Saturday, July 16th, while the other one was to be released sometime in early August.[65] Later in the day the user posted one of the photos he received from his friend of the music video.[66]

On July 16th, the Reddit user started to tease the upcoming single, by posting a cryptic message with random words, that when combining only the first letters you received "Dying" & "Yen",[67] which were later to be revealed to be the two songs that Slipknot recorded music videos for.[68] Later in the day the user posted the other photo taken by his friend from the music video with the caption "Ḏëšœḻâṯę Ÿęãṟŋíṉg Įŋṯèṟfėṟèḏ Ṉêṯhėṟ Gøṉë."[69] And on July 17th, the user posted a thread recapping/clearing up information.[68]

On July 18th, information about the album's second single, "The Dying Song", which featured the official album artwork with the incorrect title of The End, for Now…, was leaked onto Reddit.[70] The Reddit user @badboystwo, who had previously leaked that the album would be pressed on clear vinyl[71] and stated that the second single was actually title "Dying Song" and not "Dying",[72] revealed some information about the album in the comments of the post. Saying that the album's estimated release date was the "first week of September",[11] the album would have 12 tracks[73] and the last song on the album would be called "Finale".[74]

On July 19th, the full tracklist was leaked on Twitter.[75]

On September 16th, 14 days before the release date, the entire standard album was leaked.[76]

On September 23rd, Reddit user @richico20 posted photos of the clear vinyl variant in a record store.[77] And later reposted photos of the album's lyrical booklet and CD traycard from Instagram.[78]

With the album arriving at various stores across the world, it quickly became evident that the first pressing version of the vinyl differs greatly from the CD version. The vinyl retained the incorrect title of The End for Now… on the cover, spine and discs, with some of them having a sticker with the new album title covering the wrong one. Furthermore, the tracklist on the back lists "The Dying Song (Time to Sing)" and "Hive Mind" as "Dying Song" and "Hivemind" respectively.[79] The contents of the first pressing vinyl are also different compared to the CD. The vinyl gatefold features an old picture of the band members and the lyric sheet includes no list of band members, slightly different credits, the dedicated section to Joey Jordison and the lyrics included typos.[80]

  • Featuring a standard runtime of 57:27, The End, So Far is the shortest Slipknot studio album.
  • The album cover was made by Virgilio Tzaj. Here is the full version of the artwork.
  • Despite the packaging on the Japanese CD stating that there is a bonus track,[83] no such bonus track is included on the CD.[84] Later pressings of the CD no longer include the section about a bonus track.[85]
    • There is a possibility that this bonus track was either "Bone Church" or the unreleased track "Genchem".
